A fixed-speed compressor still draws a large share of its full-load power while it is unloaded and making no air at all, and most plants spend far more hours part-loaded than they expect. A variable speed drive removes that waste by slowing the motor to track demand, and because electricity is usually seventy per cent or more of what a compressor costs over its life, the difference shows up on the bill rather than on the datasheet.
