Where the air demand is intermittent - a tyre bay, a fabrication shop, a spray gun used a few times an hour - a piston machine on a receiver is the sensible buy. It costs a fraction of a screw compressor, it tolerates being switched off between jobs, and the receiver under it carries the short peaks so the motor is not starting every minute. Single-stage units cover general workshop pressure; two-stage units run cooler and reach higher pressure for harder duty.
