Oil-sealed rotary vane pump, the general-purpose workhorse for packaging, laboratory and handling duty where a deep and steady vacuum is needed.
If an application needs vacuum and nothing about it is unusual, this is almost always the pump. Oil sealing lets it pull down to a fraction of a millibar, the capacity range covers everything from a single vacuum packer to a central house system, and parts are available everywhere. The one thing it will not tolerate is liquid or heavy vapour in the inlet - that is the point at which a liquid ring pump becomes the better answer.
Choosing a vacuum pump is mostly about what is in the gas stream, not the vacuum level on the datasheet – wet, dusty or vapour-laden gas rules out pumps that look perfectly capable on paper.
