Air is already seventy-eight per cent nitrogen; a PSA plant simply adsorbs the oxygen out of it and keeps the rest. Once the plant is installed the only running cost is the electricity to compress the air, which is why a site consuming cylinders steadily usually sees the investment back within a year or two. Purity is selected to the application - food packing needs far less than laser cutting or pharmaceutical blanketing, and paying for purity you do not need wastes energy.
