Close-coupled versions save space where there is little of it; long-coupled units on a baseplate are easier to service and take a wider range of drivers. What decides the selection is the duty point - flow and head together - rather than the motor size, which is a consequence rather than a specification.
Pumps are specified against a duty point, a fluid and a temperature, and getting any of the three wrong tends to show up as a seal failure rather than a performance complaint.
